Yes, they do feed on us for survival

Flies have been around for ages. Human history has many references to them. While flies have an important role in the ecosystem, they are also flag bearers in spreading certain diseases. Flies that are common in Dubai share these traits too. They are one easy way to contaminate our food and spread microorganisms even in a well-maintained household.

In the food industry, from small scale to large scale, flies have considerable influence in their success. Their mere presence can ruin a business in edible manufacturing. They are an open health hazard issue and their presence is often considered as a badly maintained work site.

Regulatory authorities can impose fines if they notice the presence of flies during inspections and can affect the goodwill of the company. Flies are one of the largest groups of insects with two wings and are categorised into small indoor flies and large flies. Small indoor flies include Phorid Flies, Drain Flies, Fruit Flies and Fungus Gnats while House Flies are large in size.

Phorid Flies

Phorid flies are another type of small fly found in residential and commercial areas/buildings. Because of the ability to penetrate into the soil and locate breeding sites, these flies are even cold as “coffin flies”. Phorid Flies lay eggs on or beside moist decay materials and it requires 14-37 days for an egg to reach the adult stage. The high population of phorid flies indicates unsanitary conditions since they are mainly breeding in moist, decaying and decomposing materials, garbage, drainages, dung, faeces etc.

Drain Flies

Because of their fuzzy, moth-like appearance, Drain Flies are also called “Moth Flies”. Each drain fly lays up to 20 -100 eggs which hatch in less than 48 hours while the adults can live for 2 weeks. The larvae and pupa of drain flies live and breed in the thin microbial films found in the drainages, underground septic tanks, air conditioner, refrigerator condensate pans, bottoms of garbage cans, under broken or cracked tiles, tracks of sliding glass doors etc.

Fruit Flies

Fruit Flies are even called “Vinegar or Pomace Flies” because of their nature of attracting vinegar and decaying fruits and vegetables. Fruit Flies are considered as the most public health risky insect as they have more potential in contaminating food and sterile surfaces in hospitals. These flies will breed in overripe or spoiled fruits and vegetables, moist places under kitchen equipment, soft drink dispenser, cracked tile/flooring, spilled syrups, wine/beer etc.

Fungus Gnats

Fungus Gnats are mosquito-like flies in appearance. These flies don’t bite like mosquitoes but create more nuisance flying around once face or in front of a computer screen. Fungus Gnats mainly come up from the potting soil of houseplants. These flies can be noticed more during winters due to the over watering of the plants. Fungus Gnats mainly feed on the roots of plants or on fungi growing in the potting soil while some types of these flies feed on the microbial films seen in drains.

House Flies

House flies breed in decaying organic matter such as livestock faeces and garbage. They mainly breed outside areas and migrate to indoor areas through open windows and doors within the proximity of 20 miles. Acting as carriers for various diseases, it's crucial to bring the houseflies under control. These flies reproduce quickly and the adult flies can live up to three weeks.

The recommendations or precautionary measures will be provided to our customers to avoid recurrence.
