Mosquitoes are very small flying insects. But the damage they can do is beyond imagination. They are known carriers of diseases like Malaria, Dengue, Zika etc. To most of us, they are a natural annoyance. But there are times when they grow out of control and will force us to take professional help.

No, we are not food

Mosquitoes are more active in summer than any other season. Both males and females feed nectar, aphid honeydews and plant juices whereas female mosquitoes make a buzzy sound and require nutrients from human / animal / birds blood meal for producing eggs. So, they keep being attracted to humans and make use of human blood. But male mosquitoes don’t have blood-sucking mouthparts since they only drink sugar-based fluids.

While mosquitoes cannot drain our blood enough to kill us, they can act as vectors for transmitting many viral diseases.

How to Control Mosquitos?

Mosquitoes can be controlled either by eliminating the breeding sites or by applying effective larvicides or adulticides or by mechanical proofing.

Remove Stagnant Water For Mosquito Control

Mosquitoes mainly breed in water. So the best effective way for the eradication and population control of mosquitoes is by eliminating their breeding sites by removing stagnant water.

The foremost step in mosquito control is to conduct a thorough inspection and identify the areas where water can be accumulated. Clean your premises and surroundings, remove all stagnant water and accumulated waste.

Change the accumulated water in bird water baths, fountains, flower vases, wading pools, and rain barrels at least once a week. Also, make sure the indoor & outdoor plants are not overfilled with water

Make sure the swimming pools are treated with appropriate swimming pool chemicals and the water must be drained out completely if it is not in use.

Make sure the wells, septic tanks, water tanks, cisterns, cesspools, open vents or plumbing pipes are tightly covered.

Eliminate water from rain gutters, old tires, buckets, plastic covers, old toys or any other containers where mosquitoes can breed.

Pack / fill tree holes or hollow stumps to prevent them from filling with water.

Mosquitoes use water for breeding. They spend a good amount of their infancy in water and get wings when they are ready to annoy us.

Mosquito control at Larvae stage

The control of mosquitoes at the larvae stage is the backbone of mosquito control. This will help in the source reduction of mosquitoes. The pesticide used to kill the Larvae is called Larvicide. Larvicides such as bacterial cultures and insect growth regulators are widely used to treat the mosquitoes at their larvae stage.

Adult Mosquito Control

When mosquito larvae control measures are insufficient or not feasible, then it is necessary to proceed with adult mosquito control by using an effective adulticide. The most common and effective method for controlling adult mosquitoes is by ultra-low Volume treatment which is known as ULV treatment or cold fogging. ULV machines generate very fine mist droplets which will float in the air and kill all mosquitoes that come into contact with them. This treatment can be conducted during early evening or pre-dawn which is considered as the mosquitoes are more active.

Mosquito Proofing for Mosquito control

We love the sunshine, the fresh air our windows provide. But do you know they might cause mosquitoes infestation? Obviously, but we normally do nothing about it. It is cruel for us to ask to keep your windows closed and deprive you of nature’s love. But we can always use mosquito mesh as a layer over the open window and all other openings so that mosquitos cannot get in ( mesh size should not exceed 1.2mm ). They are filtered out and we can still enjoy the light, warmth and fresh air.

Mosquito repellents for Mosquito control

Mosquitoes locate their hosts by sensing the smell. The repellent works either by confusing mosquitoes by masking the smell generated from human bodies or by generating smells that mosquitoes dislike. Mosquitoes are not easily controlled by most mild repellants these days because they are overused and have lost their effectiveness against them. But the right eco-friendly repellent is still the best shot available in real-time to get rid of mosquitoes when they are too numerous.

There are different types of repellents available that act in different ways.

Chemical repellents are more common and can apply to the skin directly whereas spatial repellents cannot be applied directly on the skin which produces vapours.

From mild to strong, synthetic to organic, and combinations of effective repellents are available to treat the mosquitoes effectively.

Another type of mosquito repellent produces some electromagnetic or ultrasonic sound which repels mosquitoes.

Oscillating fan for mosquito control

The theory is mosquitoes cannot fly well against the air stream. You might actually know it because the use of conventional fans is normally effective against mosquitoes. It is a non-disruptive way for us to keep the mosquitoes away and keep the chemicals at bay.

But if you are someone who doesn't like fans at high speed, this might not be a very helpful solution.

Plants that make mosquitoes go away

There are plants that we can use in the garden area which are known to repel mosquitoes. It is not a solution for all. But we can use it wherever possible.
