First, we need to understand that wasps and hornets are different. Both of them have a yellow-black appearance. Understand that wasps can only sting ( which is painful and dangerous enough ) but hornets can bite too. The mainly seen wasps are German wasp and Common wasp.

The presence of concentrated sugar in soft drinks and sweets is a big lure for wasps. They are easy food for them and available in plenty. Soda cans if abandoned can be a good source of sugar which wasps and other pests are not going to avoid easily. Spilt food with a lot of concentrated sugar is also a big attraction for these pests.
Spilt drinks and used soda cans need to be attended to properly. Swimming pools and other sources of freshwater attract wasps. They will come looking for it and try to build a nest near it. However, wasps have some dislike for chlorinated water and prefer freshwater if available.
The use of wasp traps normally includes using a very highly concentrated source of sugar to attract or divert wasps’ attention from our living space.
Wasps are a danger even if we are not allergic to them. Wasps are capable of taking human life if they choose to swarm and attack us. Not only to humans but for pets as well.
Last but not the least, flowers are a natural source of wasp food. So if you are doing a good job with your garden there is a chance that its natural inhabitants might find a way as well.
