Termites as pests and why control them

Termites are small cellulose eating insects also known as White Ants. Termites are not directly harmful to humans like wasps or bed bugs or beetles. They do not attack the human body in normal cases. But they can cause huge damages and financial losses by destroying the structures of your buildings, furniture etc, which goes unnoticed for several years. The most suitable name for termites is Silent Destroyers. They are very much fond of wood and furniture built using different types of wood.

The termites are less than half-inch in size and they live in colonies. A colony contains either only a single King or a Queen or thousands to millions of terminates. Other than the King and a Queen, a colony contains reproductive termites, soldiers and workers. The soldier and worker termites are wingless and the female reproductive gains wings, mate and flies off to start another colony. Both male and female reproductive termites are called swarmers. The soldiers take care of their nests from other pests like ants whereas the workers search for food, maintain the nest, and take care of the queens and larvae.

The commonly seen termites are dry wood termites and subterranean termites. The dry wood termites do not live underground and are mainly seen in the woods but the subterranean termites are mainly seen in the soil and invade the structures from the underground.

Termites are an issue at homes, offices and industrial premises. At times, the infestation as a pest is so bad that we will have to ask help from pest control companies and the professionals who work for it as a remedy. There are more than 2500 species of termites identified and it is very important to know whether it is a dry wood termite or subterranean termite for an effective treatment since the treatment methodology for both species are different.

Pre-Construction
Termite Treatment

In UAE, by law, it is mandatory to have a termite treatment at a pre-construction site no matter if it is a residential or commercial property. Such a prevention technique is very effective and has gone miles in addressing termite control in Dubai and other Emirates.

Customers are also specific about an environment that is termite-free. A lot of people ask for such a situation when they commit to various projects.

The soil is treated with insecticides to prevent termite infection. Only after this, the slab is placed. This will ensure the existence of a chemical-based anti-termite fence between slab and masonry. Such an approach has been proven effective in keeping termites at bay.

Post-construction termite control

There are also post-construction termite prevention treatment methods used in Dubai. In post-construction termite treatment, a thorough inspection must be carried out to identify the infested areas. Then holes will be drilled around the premises and filled with anti-termite material. This will act as a fence between the building and the termites.

Can we do anti-termite treatment ourselves?

We must understand that prevention methods are the most effective in pest treatment. Because pests in nature breed in huge numbers in a very small span of time. Their presence, infestation and dominance etc happen within a short period of time. And if we are not quick enough to take professional help, most pests, termites in particular will inflict serious damage to property.

Another problem is the chemical and the chemical compounds involved. We need to be very careful about what kind of chemicals we are going to use. It is important that we do not create a big problem to solve a small one. If not properly used certain chemicals can infect sources of water, cause harm to humans, animals, birds and other protected life forms.

It is also crucial to use the approved quantity and combination which are deemed eco-friendly by the Dubai municipality and other competent authorities. Including international certification programs.

Understanding Termites for controlling them

There are more than 2500 species of termites are identified and it is very important to know their species for an effective treatment since the treatment methodology for each species varies

Combination of moisture and wood debris

There is no better lure for termites than abandoned wood. When moisture joins this company, wood debris and scrap wood scattered around the premises can be a good starting point for termite infections. Make sure that the wood and moisture combination does not exist. And if there is too much wood debris, take it far from your active area.

To be sure, dispose of them properly and make sure that such generation points do not exist around your building.

No contact with the foundation of the building

Make sure that heaps of soil and other similar attractive conditions are far from your building’s foundation. They can be an active catalyst for termites and will build from it.

Dampness

The presence of water is critical for any life form. Dampness and moisture are ready to use for termites and build an infestation.

Divert water

Garden sprinklers should be far enough from the foundation and walls. Make sure that they do not make them wet or create moisture conditions.

Be careful with the wooden exterior

Wooden exteriors need proper coating and protection to make sure that they are not attracting termites and can prevent an infestation.

Stack firewood away

If you have firewood stock, make sure that it is decently far away from the building and the foundation. The distance should be at least 6 metres or more.
